Giants reportedly have ‘serious interest’ in acquiring Kam Chancellor

The Giants desperately need help at safety, and with Chancellor holding out with three years left on his deal, a source tells me the Giants did call to see whether Seattle would move him and for what.

There are three reasons why the trade makes absolutely no sense for the Giants. The Giants pursued safety Devin McCourty in free agency, but he re-signed with the Patriots.

Throughout this offseason, the New York Giants have been looking for another safety that could pair up with Landon Collins, and Chancellor may be exactly what they are searching for.

You can only imagine the asking price would be high for Chancellor, I mean we are talking about one of the league’s most feared players.

Trading for Chancellor would immediately bolster a Giants defense that was shaky in the preseason.

Tom Coughlin and Jerry Reese are on the hot seat, though, and they need to make some noise this year to ensure they’ll be around any longer. Neither the Seahawks nor Chancellor seem ready to budge.

Second, he’d cost a lot to acquire.

Despite the reported talks, Josina Anderson of ESPN said Chancellor had “not been informed of any interested trade partners at this time”. Seattle had to trade center Max Unger and a first-round pick to get Graham and a fourth rounder. Chancellor’s holdout started because the lack of guaranteed money within his contract.

Kam Chancellor would fill those needs and more. He’s not all of a sudden going to show up in New Jersey and be happy about the same contract he has right now in Seattle.

Chancellor, who has watched several teammates sign lucrative new contracts in the past year, has made it clear he feels he is underpaid.

Even though the Seahawks aren’t dealing from a position of strength, they would still probably covet a high draft pick or two for Chancellor’s services. Should something change – say, Seattle decides it wants to dump him and move on – expect the Giants to try to get to the front of the line to acquire him.
