Giants’ Samardzija has no-hitter through 6 against Mets

Cespedes provided Syndergaard all the offensive support he needed with a two-run home run in the seventh inning as the New York Mets duo combined to knock out the Giants in a 2-0 victory.

New York Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard works against the San Francisco Giants in the first inning of a baseball game, Sunday, Aug. 21, 2016, in San Francisco.

But there is such a thing as personal progress, and Samardzija made it while taking a no-hit bid further than he ever had Sunday night.

Ryan Braun’s two-out, two-run double in the sixth cut the deficit to 6-3.

The Mets had lost five of six before topping the team that began the day leading the NL West.

The Mets split this series with the Giants at two games a piece but won the season series four games to three. “We’re swinging the bats better”.

“I think everything worked out well”, Colon said through a translator. “For me, I was just anxious about the score”.

NATIONALS 11, BRAVES 9: Ryan Zimmerman homered among his three hits in his return from the disabled list, and visiting Washington used an eight-run fourth inning to take control before holding on.

“We just want to start to build on this”, Collins said of the Saturday and Sunday wins.

“I’ve had big power hitters but I haven’t had anybody (where) the ball comes off the barrel of the bat like that”, Collins said. “But if you’re going to win, your good players have to play good”. It was a attractive game with the pitching on both sides.

Ramirez then hit the first pitch over the left field wall for his 10th home run, giving Cleveland a 3-2 lead.

It was turning into such a stabilizing start for Samardzija (10-9), who has spent the past dozen starts fishtailing on the road while struggling with the age-old distinction between an adjustment and an overcorrection.

Moore, acquired at the trade deadline to bolster the back of the Giants rotation, has a 4.70 ERA in four starts with his new team.

Up next: One of the best hair matchups of the year. The Giants, meanwhile, are 1-5 in Samardzija’s last six starts, are 2-5 in their last seven home games and have dropped eight of their last 11 versus a team with a losing record.

And Syndergaard pitched like he did back in April and May, when he was unhittable.

Samardzija controlled the strike zone from there, and put together a particularly impressive sequence when he struck out Granderson and Cespedes in the fourth.

“I liked where he’s at and he carried that into today’s game”, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of Samardzija. “Those eight innings, it just felt like it was me and Rene out there”.

Said Bochy: “He pitched his heart out”. Jeff Samardzija takes on Noah Syndergaard. Leadoff hitter Jose Reyes hit a grounder to short, but Brandon Crawford dove to his right to make an outstanding backhand stop and then threw to first in time for the out.

Miami has won two straight after a three-game skid, and handed Pittsburgh is second straight loss after winning six of its previous seven.

Syndergaard faced one over the minimum and didn’t allow a runner past first base. The ball cleared the left field bleachers before touching down on a cement walkway. Yoenis Cespedes hit his third homer in the last two games and Jeurys Familia picked up his 41st save of the season.

So what that great philosopher Lawrence Peter Berra said is definitely true, “You are never out of it, until you are out of it”.
