Gibson holds Boston to 2 hits, Twins beat Red Sox

A three-run first inning was just a taste of things to come from the Boston Red Sox on Thursday as they smashed the Minnesota Twins 13-2.

Boston is 54-39 overall, 33-20 at home and 49-39-5 with the over. Benintendi went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs and two RBIs in Portland’s 9-3 win over the Binghamton Mets, catching four fly balls and a lineout in left.

Steven Wright (12-5) tied his career high with nine strikeouts and held Minnesota to four hits in eight innings.

Instead, Ortiz rolled over a ground ball to second, and with the Twins infield drawn in, it was enough to turn a 4-2-3 double play that took the starch out of the inning for the Sox. At 35-and-60, the Twins own the worst record in the American League.

“We just didn’t have a lot of offense to muster off of him”, Molitor said.

Kennys Vargas doubled in the next at-bat before Grossman grounded out to plate the Twins’ first run. He added a single in the seventh and was the only Minnesota batter with more than one hit. “They’re all waiting on the edge of their seat for something awesome to happen”, Duffey said.

“Looking for a home run right there”, Ortiz said. “That’s never a good taste in your mouth”.

The Red Sox got a leadoff homer from Mookie Betts and a one-out single by Xander Bogaerts in the first, then went hitless until the bottom of the ninth against closer Brandon Kintzler. I feel like the guys they’re rolling out there, I don’t have a spot.

Up Next: The Red Sox and Twins will play game three tomorrow night at 7:10 PM.

“I think everybody in the ballpark just assumed this one might have a chance to be ended right there”, Farrell said. They also got a solo homer from Dozier (his 17th) in the second.

Twins: C Kurt Suzuki was not in the starting lineup for the Twins, getting some rest and avoiding the heat. Buxton was 1 for 9 as Minnesota took two of three games against Detroit.

The final score to the game was 11-7 with the Red Sox taking the win. Swihart has been out since severely spraining the ankle on June 4. He didn’t pitch poorly, but the Red Sox did manage to put their bats on the ball a fair few times. John Farrell says it was more a matter of stiffness and a precautionary move, with the team planning to re-evaluate tomorrow, but until we’ve left this well in the past with Betts playing like Betts, there’s going to be no sleeping easy. After two All-Star Game appearances and two World Series titles, Buchholz has found out how the other half lives during the 2016 season.

Bogaerts laced a two-run double two innings later to spark another three-run frame for the Red Sox. It appeared it was a bit of an awkward throw with him being on the run.
