Gillespie to leave Yorkshire at end of season

The 31-year-old moved to Headingley in 2013 after he lost his way at his native Durham and was back playing for England within 12 months after four years in the worldwide wilderness.

Yorkshire have announced that Jason Gillespie will vacate his position as head coach when the season comes to an end. “It’s tough because I love my job, plain and simple. We’ll see how those initial ideas pan out and take it from there”, said Moxon.

However, the focus will now be very much on the remaining four County Championship fixtures, beginning with Wednesday’s match against Hampshire.

‘It’s news we’d always feared, ‘ he said.

Now, with four games remaining Yorkshire are still well-placed to make it three titles in a row and send Gillespie back home to South Australia on a flawless high.

“Particularly in four-day cricket, it’s a remarkable record, and we’re starting to improve in one-day cricket as well, so he’s done a great job for Yorkshire overall”.

“After Sunday’s match, he came to me and said “look, I’m getting a lot of questions about what I’m going to be doing”. I can’t thank him enough for his guidance and friendship.

Gillespie was visibly emotional as he read a pre-prepared statement.

“I’m obviously gutted he’s leaving because he was good for me, and good for the team”, said Plunkett, who made his England debut in 2005.

“The initial plan was for the family to go back and spend a bit of time in Oz, and then after the Big Bash we would all come back for another season at Yorks”.

Yorkshire will not name Gillespie’s successor until the season ends.

“Once it became clear that wasn’t going to happen and the family was going to stay in Australia, the goalposts shifted a bit”.

Gillespie has won the County Championship twice during his time in charge and is on course to bow out with a hat-trick of titles despite again losing key players to England.

“If anything, I think it’s going to inspire everybody to finish the season strongly”.

The 41-year-old’s achievements in England saw him linked with a coaching job in the Australian national team, but he chose to stay with Yorkshire.

“I hope we can make it three this year in the championship”, he said.
