At some point, Geyser and Weier will most likely have separate trials.

The two defendants, now aged 14, are being tried for attempted murder as adults after losing an appeal and face decades in jail if convicted. Bohren said he anticipates setting a court date for March or April 2017.

That leaves the state Supreme Court as the girls’ last hope of being moved into juvenile court, but Cotton said Friday he won’t ask the high court to take Geyser’s case because it doesn’t present a novel question of law. The Associated Press had not named either of them before Friday because their attorneys sought to move them back to juvenile court. Leutner crawled to a road where a bicyclist found her.

The two girls, who were 12 at the time, were captured by police later that day walking near a highway with a knife in one of their backpacks.

Prosecutors say they plotted to kill their classmate for months as a sacrifice to the fictional character “Slender Man” after reading horror stories online.

The girls had planned to stab their friend during a sleepover at Ms Geyser’s house where they had been celebrating her birthday.

They told investigators they believed the crime would win them the favour of Slender Man, and said they planned to walk 300 miles to the Nicolet National Forest and live as servants to Slender Man in his mansion.
