Girl becomes 4th family member dead in crash

“There’s a lot that can be done to improve safety on the traffic engineering side, there’s things that can be done on the enforcement side, but ultimately the biggest determinant of traffic safety is driver behavior.”

Catherine Love McKay is now facing impaired driving causing death charges after the crash on a section of highway that has been the scene of other fatal collisions in the past.

Mounties said the Van de Vorsts were in a vehicle that was struck by an SUV that was crossing Highway 11 just north of Saskatoon.

“Safety on the provincial highway system is our highest concern and it was really disheartening to hear about the (impaired driving) charges that were laid in relation to his collision”, Wakabayashi said. The mayors of Warman and Osler, two of the nearest communities to the scene at Highway 11 and Wanuskewin Road, renewed calls for changes after these latest fatalities. “We’ll listen very carefully to what highways has to recommend with respect to this particular investigation”.

“Although the collision frequency is increasing faster than traffic volume, which may indicate some deterioration of safety at that intersection”, he said. Police said after the death of the girl that additional charges are pending. The government had widened the shoulders at the intersection and added more lighting.

“She was such a help when I was going through that process myself”, said Sax.
