The shooting prompted an immediate evacuation at Alpine and other schools to go on lockdown, officials said. The statement said the district will have counselors and clergy available Monday when classes resume. Alpine police referred to its Facebook page for updates, but none had been posted as of Thursday afternoon. The sheriff says the alleged shooter later died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and that a gun was found nearby.

The sheriff said the threat was later deemed a hoax, but that it required officers to rush to the university from the high school. There was also a bomb threat at a motel in Marathon, about 20 miles east of Alpine.

A federal agent was also shot accidentally by a marshal, and his condition is listed as stable.

A girl of 14 shot and wounded a female classmate before apparently taking her own life in an attack on a Texas high school. However, the Varsity volleyball team will play at Alpine Middle Gym against Van Horn at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 12 p.m.

Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson told CBS7.com that someone who called his office said “Y’all better leave me alone” and made threats against Sul Ross State University.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said in a statement: “I am now monitoring the active shooter situation in Alpine”. Authorities say they’ll be investigating and possibly release more information as to a motive in the coming days. “We don’t want this and we can’t explain it yet”, Dodson told KWES-TV. The Varsity football team will play away against Pecos at 7 p.m.
