One of the biggest announcements from WWDC 2016 wasn’t actually announced on stage: removable default apps. Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights & Strategy explains it as Apple using non-personal information in aggregate to teach Siri new tricks, then having all the personalization take place on the individual device. Apple is also adding Siri’s artificial intelligence to its messaging app, which will get quick access to emojis and new ways to expand and change how texts are displayed. Messenger, the most popular messaging app in the West, has over 900 million monthly active users, while Snapchat has recently surpassed 150 million monthly active users, according to a recent report from Bloomberg.

iOS 10 also brings emoji predictions as you type, and Messages will highlight words that have corresponding emoji characters, allowing users to tap them and instantly turn them into images. That will open up a wide variety of new features. The new operating system will be released for free, likely in September. The Keyboard can understand when someone asks where you are and proactively let you send your location on a map. The feature works in English and Chinese. This works with both Apple apps and third-apps. Apple Pay is also coming to Switzerland, France, and Hong Kong in the next few months. For instance, say: “Find high school comedies from the ’80s” and tvOS 2 will serve up a variety of selections.

The new OS also lets users write on the watch’s face.

Once again the Apple faithful dutifully attended or watched its annual developer update to see what the company had in store. And sure enough, the OS X has been officially renamed macOS, to standardise the naming convention of Apple’s product eco-system. Much like Cortana has been integrated into Windows 10, Mac users can speak to their computers and have Siri search the Web or find other items on the desktop.

The new auto-unlock feature on MacOS detects if it’s the owner of the machine by matching the time of fight on their Apple Watch with the action of Macbook’s lid being opening to omit any need for a password input.

The Apple File System (APFS) is the next-generation file system created to scale from an Apple Watch to a Mac Pro, the company said.

Though many believed that Apple would announce a proprietary person-to-person payments system in iMessage, it appears that functionality is being looked after by third-party apps like Square Cash.
