Global Day of Peace observed globally

Ban Ki-moon, secretary general of the United Nations, on this day of peace “calls on the people of the world to reaffirm their commitment to living in harmony as members of a single human family.”. The first Peace Day was observed in September 1982. More specifically, the General Assembly officially focuses on dedicating this day to strengthening the ideals of peace, both globally and among individuals.

As conflicts continue to rage in Ukraine, Syria and locations around Asia, Africa and South America, worldwide Peace Day is perhaps a timely reminder of the alternatives that exist to violence. This year’s theme “Partnerships for Peace: Dignity for All”, however reminds the people of Zimbabwe about the unfortunate circumstances on the ground.

“We live at a moment of peril”, he said in his message for the Day, drawing attention to the fact that “this is also an era of great promise”.

This year, Burger King is teaming up with its fast-food competitors to hand out 1,500 “peace day burgers” at a pop-up location in Atlanta, USA Today reported.

In years past, the day has been responsible for ceasefires in the war in Afghanistan and a halt in violence in other regions. Through diverse programs, events and calls to action, the global Day of Peace is an occasion to build a sense of solidarity, awareness of the current issues, and knowledge of ways to advocate for change.
