Global survey ranks Melbourne as most liveable city
Melbourne remains the only city in the world to have this week topped the Economist’s Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Global Liveability Index for the fifth year in a row.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said Melbourne had excelled in all five categories.
Austrian capital Vienna (97.4 points), Canada’s Vancouver (97.3) and Toronto (97.2) closely followed Melbourne.
Russia’s involvement in the Ukraine conflict and the sanctions imposed on the country by the global community has also negatively impacted the liveability of Moscow and St Petersburg, placing them at number seven and 10 respectively on the list of cities to experience the biggest falls in liveability.
The Economist survey placed Perth eighth in the rankings, while Brisbane was 18th. “Through our higher standard of living we are able to attract the kind of talent and workforce that will drive the 21st century economy”.
“Melbourne offers an enviable lifestyle – some of the best sports and major events, the best artists and creative minds, the best universities and schools, the best entrepreneurs and ideas, world-class and well-connected infrastructure and a strong economy – what’s not to love”, said Andrews.
“This is huge for us in terms of our worldwide students, who wish to come to the city that is the most liveable in the world to study”, he said. “This is an achievement all Victorians can be proud of”.
“Conflict will not just cause disruption in its own right, it will also damage infrastructure, overburden hospitals and undermine the availability of goods, services and recreational activities”, the report stated.
Most recently Monocle’s Quality of Life Survey put Tokyo in the number one spot, with Melbourne and Sydney on fourth and fifth place respectively.

Canada however dominated the rankings, taking three of the top five positions.
