Gloria Steinem: Young women back Sanders so they can meet ‘boys’

YoutubeFeminist author Gloria Steinem had some curiously gendered things to say about women during a recent appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher: she accused young females of being insufficiently radical and only interested in Bernie Sanders because “the boys are with Bernie”.

Maher remarked that President Obama got over 90 percent of black voters and that Clinton will likely not get over 90 percent of women voters. She helped him in a 1996 re-election fight when he was in the House of Representatives, appearing alongside him and anointing him an “honorary woman”.

“Oooh”, Maher said, as the crowd tittered.

Asked why the former secretary of state isn’t doing better among young women, Steinem said females typically don’t start taking politics seriously until they get older. Younger women overwhelmingly support Bernie Sanders.

It’s no great secret that young women in the Democratic Party prefer Bernie Sanders to Hillary Clinton.

They’re going to get more activist as they grow older.

The feminist writer and activist made the comments on Bill Maher’s show on Friday. Maher said. “He has proved – I think, at this point – that this is a year when anything can happen”. She has been campaigning for Sanders as one of the leaders of the Millenials for Bernie movement. “How well do you know me?” “We should be allowed to support who we want without attacking each other”.

Kathleen Graves, founder of the Babes for Bernie Instagram account, which has accumulated over 11,000 followers since its inception, promptly responded to Steinem’s accusations with the new hashtag: #NotHereForBoys.
