GM, LG Team Up for Electric Components on Chevrolet Bolt
LG Chem, now employs approximately 318 people and plans to hire between 70 and 90 new workers in the next six months, said Human Resources Manager Jeremy Hagemeyer. The all-electric vehicle is said to be their first affordable electric powered vehicle that can go the distance.

A number of components will be provided by LG, which among other things, are the electric motor (sketched by GM), electronics that will be accessed in the cabin, power inverter module as well as battery paraphernalia.
LG Electronics is said to have invested more than $250 million for a new Korean engineering and manufacturing facility to support the Bolt. LG will provide all of the powertrain parts for making the Chevy Bolt.
Reuss said GM’s future development model for EVs – whether the company internally designs most of the vehicle’s subsystems or outsources most of it to LG or another supplier – will vary by project. “The opportunity to work with GM on such game-changing technology is indicative of exactly the type of contributions that traditional tech companies can make in the automotive space”.
The Bolt will be built at GM’s Orion Assembly Plant in Orion Township beginning in late 2016, GM said. A test fleet of about 100 Bolts has been driven for weeks at GM’s Milford Proving Grounds. The Bolt will cost under $30,000 including a $7,500 federal electric vehicle tax credit.
It appears so, if we based it on General Motors’ announcement of its strategic alliance with Korean company LG on Tuesday.
GM showed the Chevy Bolt concept, an orange hatchback with seating for five, earlier this year during the North American worldwide Auto Show. LG, specifically LG Chem, has made huge strides in battery technology. One of the subsidiaries of LG, LG Chem also provided battery cells for the Chevrolet Bolt, GM’s plug-in hybrid vehicle which was introduced in 2010. Ken Chang, vice president of vehicle components at LG Electronics, said that the new relationship was, “a big lift for LG Group”.

LG has become deeply involved in vehicles as tech giant, Apple Inc. “We’re also looking at ways we can leverage LG’s expertise in consumer electronics, particularly in display systems, to raise the bar with our interiors”.
