GM recalls 4M vehicles for air bag defect linked to 1 death

General Motors Co. said Friday it is recalling 3.64 million 2014-17 model-year vehicles in the USA for a software issue that may prevent front air bags from deploying.

The company says the defect concerns the sensing and diagnostic module.

GM says in rare cases the car’s airbags will go into test mode, which stops them from inflating during a crash.

GM said that it will notify customers of the recall.

Trucks, cars and SUVs from the 2014-17 models are to be recalled.

2014-2017 model years Chevrolet Corvette, Trax, Caprice PPV and Silverado 1500; Buick Encore; GMC Sierra 1500.

The US auto giant said that problems with the embedded software in the vehicles can cause the front airbags to fail to deploy in a crash.

The defect was linked to three accidents that resulted in injuries and one fatal accident, all of which were in the United States, Wilkinson said.

The GM recall is large, but the fix involves a software update rather than a mechanical change. Dealers already have access to the software update so this “repair” should be able to pass quickly and with very little effort.

The recall involves 3.6 million vehicles.

The company informed that cost for the current recall will be included in third quarter earnings to be reported by General Motors in October.

This issue is not related to the ongoing recall of air bags by Japanese supplier Takata that now affects over 20 million vehicles and a dozen of manufacturers worldwide.
