GM recalls about 290000 older Chevrolet Impala sedans

GM is recalling more than 289,000 of those vehicles to address the issue, which stems from a wiring flaw.

GM said it believes that “the results of further testing and analysis will demonstrate that the vehicles do not present an unreasonable risk to safety and that no fix will ultimately be required”.

GM says its vehicles’ inflator designs have better venting, that they are packaged in the instrument panel to minimize exposure to moisture and that solar-absorbing windshields and side glass minimize interior temperatures.

The defect declaration is potentially significant for GM’s bottom line, as the 4.3 million components are estimated to cost $550 million to replace.

NHTSA spokesman Bryan Thomas on Thursday reiterated the agency’s position.

General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) has issued a recall of close to 300,000 Chevrolet Impalas. But the chemical can deteriorate and burn too fast, blowing apart a metal canister and hurling shrapnel. Now the dealers will replace any damaged wires and the others would also be coated in anti-abrasion tape. According to the company, it is possible for the lower portion of the front passenger seat frame to rub against the wires for the passenger presence sensor module. The recall includes almost 290,000 vehicles in the United States and about 17,000 in Canada.
