M – GM has temporarily stopped selling model-year 2016 versions of its large three-row SUVs because the company overstated the vehicles’ fuel-economy ratings by 1 to 2 mpg. The automaker is now printing correct labels and will ship them to dealers as soon as possible.

“This label error has no effect on the safety and operation of the vehicles”, Wilkinson said.

General Motors Co. confirmed Friday that it has stopped selling almost 60,000 of its most popular large SUVs because the vehicles have incorrect Environmental Protection Agency labels that overstate fuel economy.

“GM is stopping sale of the affected models until a corrected label is printed and affixed”, a memo to dealers reads, the trade publication said.

Although the exact cause of the mistake has not been explained, a spokesperson said that, despite there being no changes to engine or transmission between the 2015 and 2016 model years, the miles per gallon numbers did change. An all-wheel-drive Traverse gets 15 mpg in the city, 22 mpg on the highway and 17 mpg combined, according to updated figures on the US department website.

Automotive News reported the stop sale earlier Friday.

Environmental Protection Agency spokeswoman Laura Allen said Friday the agency has been notified by GM that it is correcting fuel economy labels on the three 2016 SUVs. The company is sorting through its plan to address any customer complaints that might arise. But GMC has redesigned the Acadia for the 2017 model year and it is now assembled in Spring Hill, Tenn. Unless other evidence emerges, GM isn’t likely to face government penalties for the miscue. He said he couldn’t detail what those changes were.

GM also is advising dealers to correct or remove any marketing materials, including showroom vehicle-information booklets, that show the incorrect fuel economy figures.
