GM To Add Second Shift, 1200 Jobs At Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly

The company added that most of its laid off workforce would be transferred to other operations, including the Detroit-Hamtramck factory that on Thursday was announced to add 1,200 workers early next year for a second shift.

The company is expected to add about 40 salaried workers and the rest will be hourly, plant spokeswoman Courtney Zemke said.

The Detroit plant now assembles the Chevy Volt, Impala and Malibu.

GM plant manager Gary West said: “This is the result of the award-winning vehicles Detroit-Hamtramck produces and the confidence GM has in our team to build world-class quality for our customers”.

General Motors is on its way to help restore a few of what the city is best known for by opening a second shift at their plant there, giving citizens more jobs and more hope as they continue to struggle through what has been an increasingly hard time of change and slow restoration. The plant will also start production of the Cadillac CT6 in 2016.

The 4.1 million-square-foot Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly opened in 1985. UAW Local 22 Shop Chairman, Don LaForest agreed, citing the gratitude and excitement the staff have for the future expansion.

News the company is expanding work at its last remaining Detroit plant came just as the United Auto Workers union is set to decide whether to enter its next round of focused labor talks with GM or Ford Motor Co.

The plant produces the Buick Verano and the Chevrolet Sonic, two small vehicles whose sales have had double-digit drops this year as lower gasoline prices increase demand for larger cars.
