GM, UAW pledge $3M for Flint’s water crisis

“In order for Flint residents to once again have confidence and trust in the water coming from their faucets, all lead pipes in the city of Flint need to be replaced”, Weaver said in a news conference Tuesday. She said at least $60 million is needed. McDaniel will work to coordinate the lead pipe removal project.

Edwards told the AP that when his research team sampled Flint drinking water in April 2015, it contained enough phosphate to feed bacteria even though extra phosphates hadn’t been added to inhibit corrosion during the previous year.

The Associated Press said that proposal includes $25 million to replace lead-contaminated pipes, bringing the total state allocation to the crisis to $232 million should lawmakers approve the plans.

“We put in all new windows, encapsulated the house in sheet rock, put on new trim, rented a Hepa vacuum [to remove allergens] and vacuumed the entire yard, put in new carpet and sanded the hardwood floors”.

With the president’s support and the national exposure, we’re hoping this whole ordeal will soon be over and residents can safely drink city water again. But, he said, “It’s more a question of let’s do it in an organized thoughtful, scientific and engineering correct fashion”. There are also civil actions that could be undertaken, Flood said.

The governor will announce the entire budget in a presentation at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Lansing.

He said there are two ways more contamination can be caused in these replacement projects.

The documents, obtained by Progress Michigan, also showed that the response to Flint’s water crisis was not only slow but also highly unequal. The Democrats-only committee does not have subpoena power.

The city of some 100,000 people was under control of a state-appointed emergency manager in 2014 when it switched its source of water from Detroit’s municipal system to the Flint River to save money. It was an interim measure while a new pipeline to Lake Huron is being built. But residents haven’t been quick to believe the public officials’ reassurances and instead grew more frustrated with Gov. Jerry Brown’s delay in declaring a state of emergency January 6. An initial report by the taskforce chiefly blamed the MI department of environmental quality, which didn’t require Flint to use corrosion control to treat the local river water.

According to Murray, in Snyder’s recommendation, there will be significant resources dedicated to address problems in Flint during the city’s ongoing water crisis.

“For many members of the Senate Republican Caucus, the crisis in Flint has generated questions about statewide infrastructure needs and the Majority Leader is interested in exploring options for Flint and all communities in MI to ensure the most basic services are reliable and safe”. According to the suit, daughter Sophia “has experienced serious physical and emotional issues due to the contaminated water, including skin rashes, digestive problems, infections, excessive crying and irritability and the inability to sleep at night”.
