Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has been named as Germany’s new captain following the worldwide retirement of Bastian Schweinsteiger.

But the 32-year-old World Cup victor dug in his heels and told Mourinho he would not go. So I don’t think there will be much change.

Germany plays Norway in a World Cup qualifier on Sunday as it begins its campaign to defend its title in Russian Federation in 2018, but coach Joachim Loew rested most of his regulars, giving young players a chance to prove themselves.

“Of course I know that the role of captain has a great symbolic significance and I’m delighted with the faith that the national team coach has placed in me by naming me captain”.

“Philipp Lahm did a great job, as did Bastian, and I hope I can follow in their footsteps”, said Neuer, after Schweinsteiger played his final global in Wednesday’s 2-0 friendly win over Finland.

Schweinsteiger made the remarks in the wake of his final global fixture for Germany on Wednesday night, during which he bid an emotional farewell to fans after 12 years with the national team.

Ahead of his final turnout for Germany, Bastian Schweinsteiger said yesterday he would not give up on his dream of playing for Manchester United again – despite his exile by the English club’s manager, Jose Mourinho.

The video above shows both players receiving a thunderous reception as they say their goodbyes – and you can clearly see the effect it’s having on them.

Neuer has made 71 appearances for the senior national team, has 25 clean sheets, has been named World Goalkeeper of the Year in 2013, 2014, 2015 and has won a World Cup title. I know what Manchester United want. I’ve mellowed and know how to deal with these situations.

“‘I’m certainly not going to stop playing football, ” he added.

Neuer has already captained Germany in several matches during the last European championship when Schweinsteiger was absent because of injury.
