Goalless Draw in Augsburg Sees Liverpool Under Pressure for Anfield Return

Liverpool must now win the return leg at Anfield next Thursday, while his former club Borussia Dortmund won their corresponding match 2-0 at home to Porto and could potentially meet Klopp’s Liverpool if both teams advance to the next round. This was their fifth draw, of seven games, in the UEFA Europa League this season.

Having previously said Liverpool have a good chance of winning what he describes as “the little Champions League”, Klopp was frustrated as his side failed to take their chances in the round of 32, first leg in Bavaria on Thursday.

“My problem is that I think, with our quality, we should do better, but I have to be patient”.

Despite the second leg taking place just a matter of days before the Wembley Stadium final against Manchester City, Mignolet is adamant the side will just exclusively concentrate on the upcoming game.

Usually, a 0-0 draw away from home in Europe isn’t a bad result-although not getting an away goal is always a disappointment-but to fail to break down a side sitting one point above the relegation zone in their own league, missing six first-team players, then losing their star player to injury early on, makes this a poor result.

“The players didn’t underestimate Augsburg, when we play in the return we will be very well prepared – they may not be Munich or Paris, but we will be very well prepared”.

“We had great chances early on, good moments, good passing in second half, but other moments I wasn’t happy with – it’s 0-0 but I am not 100 per cent satisfied”.

While it might be tempting to think of Liverpool’s squad with their feet up watching the FA Cup on the telly, Jürgen Klopp painted a very different picture of his players’ weekend activities.

Kolo Toure – The veteran defender was a leader at the back and put in a commanding performance, but it was not the player Liverpool would have wanted to have had the best performance.

“German teams on a tactical side are really strong”.

“There were a lot of things we could have done better”, bemoaned Klopp post-match, per Gerard Brand of Sky Sports.
