Gold Star families to Donald Trump: Apologize for comments to Khans

John McCain said in a statement that the fact Trump won his party’s nomination doesn’t give him “unfettered license to defame those who are the best among us”.

Khizr Khan challenges Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump to read his copy of the US Constitution at the Democratic National Convention.

Khizr Khan is the father of Humayun Khan, who was killed in the Iraq War.

A growing chorus of GOP lawmakers chastised Trump for sparring with the Khans, who appeared at the Democratic convention on behalf of Hillary Clinton. Occasional statements that do nothing to repudiate Donald Trump’s words and actions are spineless.

A group of families of fallen service members also demanded an apology from Trump on Monday for his “repugnant” and “personally offensive” comments toward the Khans.

Trump’s dispute with the Khans has dominated the election campaign in recent days after Khizr Khan spoke at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday night, with his wife standing at his side. “She had nothing to say”, the Republican nominee had said. She subsequently did grant interviews to MSNBC and other outlets, although this didn’t stop Trump from suggesting that her husband wouldn’t allow her to talk publicly. Islam didn’t silence her, as you insinuate; her emotions did. “As I have said on numerous occasions, a religious test for entering our country is not reflective of these fundamental values”.

“Mr. Trump has praised Mr. Khan and in fact has called Captain Khan a hero”, Miller responded.

Ghazala Khan told CNN this morning, “I’m so happy to be saying that I’m a Muslim woman”.

Ghazala wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post yesterday, and said that she did not speak during her husband’s speech because she can “hardly control” herself when seeing pictures of her son, and that she is still grieving. “He said he would like to hear from me“.

Told that Trump was watching the interview and tweeting, Khan responded that all of his commentary about Trump had been “appropriate”, adding that Trump should listen to what America and the world are telling him about his “lack of empathy”.

But you don’t even need to buy one.

And then, Trump tried to (kinda) clean it up by saying Khan “was, you know, very emotional and probably looked like a nice guy to me”. “We’re a better country because of you”.

McCain further stated that as a father of sons in the armed forces, like Khizr Khan, and as a war veteran himself who suffered five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, he recognizes that Capt. Humayan Khan’s “name will live forever in American memory, as an example of true American greatness”. “I like people that weren’t captured, OK?”

When Stephanopolous questioned Trump about the sacrifices he has made in his life, he answered, “I think I’ve made a lot of sacrifices. I’m very glad to be in this country”. I’ve created thousands and thousands of jobs, tens of thousands of jobs.

“Every day I feel the pain of his loss. I raised and I have raised millions of dollars for the vets”. Khan said, demanding Trump consult the 14th amendment, which guarantees equal protection before the law. Or, you can just go to the ACLU’s website. You are minimizing the risk our service members make for all of us. There is nothing more sacrosanct to politicians and patriotic Americans.
