According to DNAinfo, a new homeless shelter in New York City aimed at LGBTQ youth is being named after Dorothy herself, Bea Arthur.

Seven years on, and the charity is putting the finishing touches on a new 18-bed shelter, the Bea Arthur Residence.
Arthur, who had always been a friend of the Ali Forney Center, bequeathed the organization $300,000 in her will.
“I’m very, very involved in charities involving youth. These kids at the Ali Forney Center are literally dumped by their families because of the fact that they are lesbian, gay or transgender – this organization really is saving lives”, Arthur said in an article published prior to her passing.
Set to open in February 2017, the centre will open in an existing building at 222 E. 13th Street in Manhatta, funded thanks to the money left by Arthur.
While the proclamation hasn’t been handed down quite yet, one hopes that they do get their wish, as Arthur certainly deserves some recognition for helping to provide a home for LGBT youth.
When the “Golden Girls” actress died in 2009, she “bequeathed $300,000” for the Ali Forney Center, a nonprofit center that works with LGBT homeless youth, the article stated.
You can’t take it with you, so leave it behind to help the community.
