News that Mel Gibson was to present an award at last weekend’s Golden Globes may have come as a shock to some, but host Ricky Gervais used the event to take a pot shot at the disgraced actor’s antisemitic past.

The 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards were announced at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on January 10 withThe Revenant and The Martian winning Best Motion Picture, Drama and Best Motion Picture, Musical Or Comedy, respectively.

Gervais’ snark aside, the Golden Globes have worked for years to shed an image of eccentric selections made by a group of little-known global journalists. Similar to other years in past, some of the winners were unpredicted.

Sylvester Stallone knocked out some heavyweight competition, too, in the supporting actor category with a win for “Creed”, beating out Idris Elba (“Beasts of No Nation”), Michael Shannon (“99 Homes”), Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies”), and Paul Dano (“Love & Mercy”).

“The Revenant” a survival thriller tells the true story of Hugh Glass, a 19 century fur trapper won three major awards in the Golden Globes.

But it is also a more raucous and risk-filled affair than the Academy Awards, starting with the humor of the host. The crowd greeted his win with a standing ovation.

“What an incredible year for women in film!” In the Best Foreign Movie category, Hungarian Holocaust drama Son of Saul was the victor.

Washington, 61, was presented with the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes ceremony in recognition of his work in front of and behind the camera.

Taraji P. Henson won Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series Drama for her hit series, Empire. Steve Jobs screenwriter Aaron Sorkin took home the Golden Globe Award for the year’s best screenplay, and Kate Winslet earned a supporting actress award for her portrayal of Apple marketing exec Joanna Hoffman.

Lawrence, 25, dedicated most of her speech to thanking “Joy” director David O. Russell, with whom she has made several films.
