The Golden Globes are selected by less than 100 foreign journalists and photographers who don’t overlap with Academy voters, but they are often a reliable predictor of who will be nominated-and possibly win-the Oscars.

The nominees for the best television drama series: “Empire, ” “Game of Thrones, ” “Mr. Robot, ” “Narcos, ” and “Outlander”.

The Hollywood Foreign Press has released the highly-anticipated list of nominees for the 2016 Golden Globe awards, and it’s made one thing abundantly clear: streaming services are here to stay as serious contenders in the new world of television. But for some reason, they weren’t moved by his gritty performance as Whitey Bulger in the Warner Bros. gangster movie.

And yet both studios are campaigning for the actresses in the supporting actress category, not in lead roles.

Alejandro Inarritu’s frontier epic “The Revenant” also received four nominations, including best picture – drama and best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio. But its ensemble cast is struggling to stand out from the pack. Whether or not that campaign strategy will backfire for the Oscars remains to be seen. John Melfi (“House of Cards”, “Sex and the City”), Lawrence Bender (“Inglourious Basterds”, “Pulp Fiction” and “Good Will Hunting”) and Kevin Brown (“Roswell”) are Executive Producers.

“Spotlight, ” the film about the Boston Globe’s coverage of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, received three Golden Globe nominations, including best picture drama. And the Los Angeles Film Critics Association went for “Spotlight”. Is it really a comedy?

Spielberg wasn’t the only big-name director left off the Globes’ list.

Gaga’s nod comes as a surprise not only to the entertainment industry but to the singer herself, who openly admitted her shock on Twitter.

“Veep” earned nomination in the best television series? musical or comedy, and the best actress category for Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Nobody seemed to like Sam Smith’s “Spectre” theme “Writing’s On The Wall”, but that didn’t stop the HFPA from nominating it for best original song over the likes of Miley Cyrus and Linda Perry (“Hands of Love”) and The Weeknd (“Earned It”).

SNUB: Lena Dunham, “Girls” HBO’s Brooklyn dramedy may no longer be the youngest, hottest show around but it had never missed out on a Globes series nom… until this year. That’s a significant elevation in rank from previous year, when Netflix came in fourth with seven nominations. SAG voters ignored it too.

The film, directed by Lenny Abrahamson, also picked up Golden Globe nominations for best film drama and best film actress in a drama for Bree Larson, who plays the child’s mother. This explains this morning’s two most baffling winners, at least relative to their critical acclaim: Netflix’s drug war drama Narcos and Amazon’s classical music comedy Mozart in the Jungle. That means a total shutout for Mad Men’s actresses, comedy actors as a whole, and most of Orange Is the New Black, whose entire cast basically counts as “supporting”.

The announcement sent Hollywood’s awards season into high gear, ahead of the all-important Oscars in February. The film will compete against “Spotlight”, “The Revenant”, “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Room” for best motion picture drama.

Mark Ruffalo’s nomination for “Infinitely Polar Bear” – a movie nearly no one saw – over “Spotlight” also befuddled. Meanwhile, Ryan Murphy’s other creation “American Horror Story” managed to get two nominations.

This is the third Golden Globe nomination for Patrick Stewart and his first nomination for a comedy series.

From the perennial favourites and big-name stars to the underdogs, biggest surprises and glaring omissions, here’s what you need to know about the nominees for the 73rd annual awards show. Fox, shut out last year, landed four nominations this year, as did ABC.
