Golden Globes 2016: Host Ricky Gervais, winners, big moments, more

“I think “Spotlight” is going to win partly because it’s a celebration of journalism and there are some 90 journalists who are voting on this”, said Timothy Gray, awards editor for trade magazine Variety. A year earlier, the CW’s Gina Rodriguez won the same award for “Jane the Virgin”, which airs back-to-back with “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” on Mondays.

Sylvester Stallone has won the Golden Globe for best supporting movie actor.

The Martian accepted the Golden Globe for best motion picture comedy.

Best foreign language film went to Hungary’s Laszlo Nemes’ “Son of Saul”, a harrowing view of life inside Auschwitz.

“Mr Robot”, about a computer programmer and vigilante hacker, took home the prize for best drama series. Gaga, who won a Globe for playing the Countess in “American Horror Story: Hotel”, noted that she wanted to be an actress before a singer. “One Hollywood publication said that me hosting would keep some stars away”, he said.

Gervais, who will host for the fourth time after a three-year stint by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, said on the “Ellen DeGeneres Show” last week that booze gives him the courage to make his wince-inducing jokes.

“If you win tonight, remember that no one cares about that award as much as you do”.

“That award is, no offense, worthless…it’s a nice bit of metal”.

The biggest laugh Gervais got was when he touched on news reports stating that following the announcement that he would host, some nominees might not attend.

The five films are the only Globe best picture nominees to also appear on the Producers Guild of America’s list of 10 best picture nominees announced this past week.

In what is probably the year’s most competitive category, best actress in a drama, Brie Larson won out over Cate Blanchett (“Carol”) and Saoirse Ronan (“Brooklyn) for her affecting performance as a woman in captivity in “Room”.

And the most awaited award – the Best Actor is expected to go in hands of Leonardo DiCaprio for his film “The Revenant”.

Samberg won his first Golden Globe at last year’s ceremony, for his role as Jake Peralta on Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

That, though, is still very strong for the Golden Globes, which have worked to shed an image of eccentric selections made by a group of little-known worldwide journalists.

Previously the 54-year-old has introduced Bruce Willis as “Ashton Kutcher’s dad”, complimented the town’s cosmetic surgeons for all their fine work, and asked Johnny Depp whether he’s even seen the critically-ridiculed, but Golden Globe-nominated The Tourist.
