The 2016 Golden Globe nominations were announced early Thursday morning – perhaps too early for presenter Dennis Quaid – and nearly immediately, this year’s hazy Oscar race became that much more clear.

Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s nominations, announced Thursday in Beverly Hills, Calif., spread nods around to a widespread field. “We set out to make a film that would help us better understand our children, but never imagined it would have the impact that it has, and we could not be more thrilled or filled with JOY to receive this nomination from the Hollywood Foreign Press”, says director Pete Docter and producer Jonas Rivera.
Unlike other awards shows, the Golden Globes celebrates both film and television, marking a time when actors from both sides of the business (which are increasingly blurring) can gather to celebrate the craft. Netflix even locked in a film nomination this year for “Beasts of No Nation” actor Idris Elba.
The Golden Globe nominees for best motion picture drama are: “Carol”, “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “The Revenant”, “Room”, and “Spotlight”.
– Director: Todd Haynes, “Carol”; Alejandro Inarritu, “The Revenant”; Tom McCarthy, “Spotlight”; George Miller, “Mad Max: Fury Road”; Ridley Scott, “The Martian”. This is the 73rd year for the Golden Globes awards. In addition to two nominations for limited series “Flesh and Bone”, Starz earned two for the feminist historical epic “Outlander”; USA, formerly a place for popular, critic-proof programming and reruns of old broadcast series, broke out with nominations for Best Drama and Best Actor Rami Malek for the acclaimed “Mr. Robot”.
To continue tech angle, HBO’s Silicon Valley earned a nod for Best TV Comedy.
Just three years after digital platforms plunged into original content television for the first time, Netflix landed a leading eight nominations for its shows and actors, ahead of usually dominant premium cable channel HBO. Interestingly, sci-fi film The Martian somehow managed to grab a nomination for Best Motion Picture, Comedy, and Best Actor In A Motion Picture, Comedy for Matt Damon – now that’s range.
Her Best Actress competition includes Brie Larson for “Room”, Saoirse Ronan for “Brooklyn”, as well as the duo from “Carol”. Robin Wright of House of Cards was nominated for the same award in the drama category.
Cartoon fans will probably be miffed that “Minions” was left off the list of Best Animated Feature nominees, apparently in favor of “Shaun the Sheep Movie”.

“On the other, it’s silly to ignore the profile boost that certain films and performances get from recognition on a highly-rated televised awards show”.
