Golden Globes Red Carpet: A Feast For The Eyes

The 73rd Golden Globes opened on Sunday with Hollywood’s biggest names turning out for the glamorous event honoring the best in film and television. 12 Years A Slave (2012) and Argo (2011) picked up Best Picture prizes at both shows, but such correlations happen roughly 50 per cent of the time in other years. Mozart’s Gael Garcia Bernal also won the best actor (comedy) prize, and as soon as he started his acceptance speech it was clear he’d been blindsided by the honour. Plus, in the eyes of many voters, Stallone has the better backstory and ideal resume for one of those sympathy Oscars that rewards an entire career’s body of work.

“I have to thank all of the people involved in making this film”, he began before delivering a long list consisting of everyone from his parents to the film’s writers to his agent and make-up artist.

In the best foreign movie category, Hungarian Holocaust drama Son of Saul was the victor.

Awards race dark horse “Steve Jobs” also got some love on Sunday with wins for Kate Winslet, for best supporting actress, and Aaron Sorkin, for the screenplay.

Only four out of the last 15 winners of best picture drama went on to win the Oscar (“12 Years a Slave”, “Argo”, “Slumdog Millionaire”, “Gladiator”) and only two of the last 15 have won it after scoring best picture comedy or musical (“The Artist” and “Chicago”).

Sometimes, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is WAY off from the Academy’s votes – in 2014, David O. Russell’s American Hustle dominated at the Globes, but it was 12 Years A Slave that reigned supreme at the Oscars!

In an upset, Alenjaro Innaritu’s bloody 1820s thriller “The Revenant” won best film drama, as well as best director for Inarritu and best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio. Awards lend a sheen of prestige to studios, which attracts talented directors and actors, and talent attracts audiences.

Ridley Scott’s sci-fi hit The Martian was named best comedy or musical film, which allowed the director to joke that he expected to receive that honour posthumously, and its star Matt Damon picked up the best actor award in that category.

Jennifer Lawrence, victor for best actress-comedy for her film Joy, was also snapped talking with ex-boyfriend Nicholas Hoult. In fact, she thought Amy Schumer would win.

And Brie Larson won best actress in a drama for playing a mother and kidnapping victim in “Room”. In accepting the award, Damon humbly noted the 18-year gap since the last time he won a Globe and how he now had a better appreciation for the moment.

Sylvester Stallone won the male counterpart of the award for the movie Creed.

Smith said: “Honestly, on a real level I genuinely didn’t think we were going to get this”. While Spotlight seems to be the frontrunner of Oscar predictions for best picture, The Revenant beat out Spotlight for best picture at the Golden Globes.
