Golf amateurs take The Open by storm but will leave empty handed

The idea of a modern Grand Slam was in many ways conceived by Arnold Palmer in 1960, and he came to St. Andrews for his first Open with every intent of adding a third major that year and then going to the PGA Championship to cap it off.

However, it was Spieth’s bogey at the Road Hole 17th that sent Under Armour’s stock down from nearly $89.50 down beneath the $89 mark. Zach Johnson and Adam Scott have been playing some inspired golf, and through 11 holes, they sat at six under par for the day and were the tournament’s co-leaders.

“Amateur players are not eligible to win prize money and therefore, should an amateur win The 144th Open, first-place prize money will be distributed proportionately among the professional players who have made the cut”.

One of the leading 4 (Paul Dunne -12, Jason Day -12, Louis Oosthuizen -12 and Jordan Spieth -11) will not have a good final round and will drop out of winning contention. 3.

Dunne and Oosthuizen tee-off together in the day’s final pairing at 1430 local time.

With that in mind, the Open Championship’s playoff format is a four-hole aggregate score. New Zealand’s Ryan Fox posted a 5-under 67 playing in the first group.

Johnson and Spieth played together over the first two rounds in St. Andrews, and Johnson looked very much like the superior player. Schniederjans finished in a tie for 42nd at last month’s U.S. Open, and he also played the weekend at last week’s Scottish Open.

Johnson led after 36 holes but an ugly 75 on Sunday knocked him back. Graeme McDowell had seven birdies in 13 holes.
