Golovkin would have preferred to face Alvarez next.
With all the catchweight stipulations Alvarez has been insisting in his tentatively scheduled mandatory WBC title defense against Golovkin, there is a possibility the bout may not push through in the fall.

According to Dan Rafael’s report, Gonzalez could face former World Amateur Champion McWilliams Arroyo, who lost a debatable split decision to Amnat Ruenroeng in his first bid for a world title. Gonzalez, who is also considered one of the pound-for-pound best, has been showcased on the same card as Golovkin throughout the last few fights. Golovkin has won 21 consecutive fights by knockout.
