Bertens, eyeing a second title of the year, outclassed Irina Khromacheva with a 6-3 6-1 quarter-final win and followed that by dumping out Swiss number two Bacsinszky 7-5 7-6 (7-1) in the Roy Emerson Arena.

The talented 16-year-old, making her tour debut, had put out German fifth seed Annika Beck 7-5, 6-2 to set up a last-four meeting on the clay with fellow Swiss Viktorija Golubic.

Gstaad: Teenage Swiss wildcard Rebeka Masarova, ranked 797th in the world, continued her fairytale run in the Ladies Championship in Gstaad on Saturday by surging into the semi-finals.

It was a struggle for both, I know, but for my game, it’s helpful when the ball bounces high and it’s not too heavy.

“I played a determined match, it was very efficient for me”, said Bacsinszky.

“I really did a good job mentally this week because I had lots of moments where I felt my shots were not quite there”.

“I think the tournament would have loved two Swiss players in the final – so sorry for that! – but I’m really happy”, Bertens said afterwards.

Jankovic appeared in control after taking the first set in commanding fashion, but Masarova fought back superbly to progress to the second round 1-6 6-4 6-2.

Home favourite Bacsinszky had blitzed Sweden’s Johanna Larsson 6-0, 6-1 to power into the semis.

Bertens then added Bacsinszky to the day’s victim list after accounting for Russian Irina Khromacheva 6-3, 6-1 in the last of the quarter-finals under flawless sunny skies.
