Gomes, Kipnis lift Indians past Reds in 11

The Indians have won two of the last three games that last year’s AL Cy Young Award victor has pitched after losing five straight, but struggled to support Kluber again in a 2-0 loss to Oakland on Sunday.

The Indians loaded the bases on five different occasions and never came away with a hit but did manage to score four runs, as Reds pitchers (Johnny Cueto twice, Manny Parra, Pedro Villarreal) all walked in a run.

“It was an anomaly”, said Reds manager Bryan Price, whose pitchers issued 10 walks, the most since walking 11 on September 18, 2013, at Houston. “I didn’t have my timing early in the game”. At the time, they appeared to be the difference in the game until the Reds rallied late to send the game into extras. Trevor Bauer (8-6) stuck around for just four innings allowing five runs on seven hits, two of those coming off the bat of Marlon Byrd.

Reds: LHP Tony Cingrani threw 93 pitches in his rehab start on Friday night. He also hit a batter.

The Indians, batting. 206 in their prior 10 games, had 11 hits for the first time since getting 13 in a 7-1 win in Tampa Bay on June 29 and improved to 4-1 against Cincinnati this season.

Suarez tied it in the bottom of the inning with his fifth homer of the season. Even this rough start didn’t harm his numbers too much, as Cueto now has a 2.79 ERA and 0.95 WHIP on the season.

The Indians mustered their run in the sixth when Francisco Lindor led off with a single, moved up on Michael Brantley’s double and scored on Carlos Santana’s grounder to shortstop.

Carlos Carrasco will get the start for Cleveland on Sunday.

The Cincinnati Reds are ready to embrace their role as sellers at the July 31 Major League Baseball trade deadline and that may have a direct impact on the Chicago Cubs. Indians RHP Josh Tomlin, on the disabled list following right shoulder surgery last April, will throw four innings or 65 pitches for Triple-A Columbus on Monday….

The Cleveland Indians look to put an exclamation point on the season series with their in-state rivals when they visit the Cincinnati Reds for the finale of their three-game set on Sunday. Hagadone, who originally went on the DL on July 7 with a lower back injury, left a rehab appearance with Single-A Mahoning Valley on Wednesday with discomfort in his elbow. He has a 5.40 ERA with three walks and eight strikeouts in a combined 8 1/3 innings over the first three. He went 0 for 3 during the All-Star Game, and is hitless in nine at-bats in the two games against the Indians.
