For the second straight night, the Mets offense only managed to eke out a single run against the Colorado Rockies in losing 6-1.
Mark Reynolds added an insurance run with a solo blast in the top of the eighth, before the freakish Jake McGee/Scott Oberg drama of yesterday played out in nearly identical fashion in the bottom of the inning. They are within one game of getting back to.500 for the first time since May 21st, and they’re just five games back in the Wild Card. Gonzalez went 2 for 5 with a home run and four RBI’s to help power the Rockies to their fifth consecutive win over the Mets this season.
The Rockies got to the southpaw quickly, with Carlos Gonzalez’s RBI double to left-center scoring DJ LeMahieu from second to give Colorado a 1-0 lead in the first.
Tyler Chatwood looked less than impressive in the first two innings, but he calmed down and worked through seven strong frames; allowing just one run on three hits.
“I think they’re going to bounce back”, Mets manager Terry Collins said. The Mets, who entered the game hitting.204 with runners in scoring position, tied with the 1962 squad for the franchise worst, went 0-for-8 on Friday. It was the longest start since June 6 for Chatwood, who retired 15 of the final 17 batters he faced after the Mets loaded the bases with two outs in the second. The Mets threatened in the eighth against left-hander Jake McGee, who gave up singles to left-handed hitters Alejandro De Aza and Curtis Granderson.
Steven Matz pitched his gluteus maximus off Friday night, escaping jam after jam until the 10th hit he allowed to the Rockies got past a diving Wilmer Flores for the go-ahead run in the sixth inning. I just said, ‘We need to lighten it up around here.’ We’ve still got good players. A James Loney solo homer accounted for the only run by NY, which was 1-for-11 with runners on Friday to drop its seasonal average in such situations.232. First baseman James Loney misplayed the ball and Story scored to make it 1-all. We’ve got to lighten it up a little bit. David Dahl couldn’t get the job done, but Nick Hundley did with a line drive single, which brought Story home, giving the Rockies a 2-1 lead. The Mets will retire Hall of Famer Mike Piazza’s No. 31 in a pregame ceremony. “I walked four tonight, but we won again, and that’s all that matters”, said Chatwood, who, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, became the first Rockies pitcher to begin a season 6-0 on the road.
The quality start was the 18th this month for the Rockies, their most in a month since recording 18 in August 2010. “Now things are looking better and we are playing better. When you get good starting pitching everything else falls into place”.
With one out, Familia (2-3) got pinch-hitter Cristhian Adames to hit a slow grounder to the right side.
Mets: 3B Jose Reyes (strained left ribcage) missed his fourth straight game.

“That’s a good benchmark”, Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. Lighten the atmosphere around here.’ We’ve got to have joy coming to the ballpark.
