WASHINGTON (AP) – Two poorly placed fastballs created plenty of problems for Lucas Giolito and the Washington Nationals on Sunday. The run counted and the Rockies lead 5-2 after eight innings. One was by Charlie Blackmon, the other by Nolan Arenado, who also tripled.

Lucas Giolito struggled with his command again and back-to-back home runs off the righty in the third lifted the Rockies over the Nationals, 5-3 final.

Los Angeles has a very solid lineup and their rotation has been spot on and have collectively filled the void left by Kershaw who is slated to return to the lineup before the playoffs start and that is an absolute nightmare for the rest of the league. “I saw a pitch that was over the plate and if you’re trying to barrel a ball to the right side, your pull side, and you hit in the air, you’re going to be able to hit it hard”. That happens with these hitters. The only qualified pitcher with a higher percentage in the major leagues is 43-year-old craftsman Bartolo Colon, who throws fastballs 89 percent of the time, and his success bewilders all. Colorado rookie OF David Dahl is 4-for-8 with two doubles and two runs scored in the series.2.
“I was putting guys away a lot more efficiently than I did today”, Giolito said.
It wasn’t the greatest outing, of course, but the Nats have certainly seen worse both lately and against the Rockies.
Overall, he is tied for 16th in the National League and seventh among NL outfielders in home runs.

The Dodgers are 5-0 in their last five Monday games, 5-2 in their last seven overall, and 4-1 in Maeda’s last five road starts while the Rockies are 1-4 in their last five overall, 1-6 in their last seven series openers, and 4-1 in their last five home games against a team with a winning record.
“They practice, too”, Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. “I thought he put it all together”.
