There may not be a bullpen in baseball looking forward to the All-Star break more than the Colorado Rockies, who have deployed 12 relievers in winning the opening two games of the final series of the first half.

Carlos Gonzalez homered and Colorado leaned on a pitcher by committee approach that featured two newcomers to beat the Braves for a fourth straight time, their longest streak ever against Atlanta. Dependable Shelby Miller was charged with all five runs on eleven hits over five frames to fall to 5-5. The ex- Cub definitely made himself some new fans last night, requiring only 34 pitches to get through three scoreless innings. Descalso ended a career-high stretch of 20 hitless at-bats when he tripled home a run in the three-run fourth and scored on left fielder Brandon Barnes’ single.

Daniel Descalso added a run-scoring triple to break a career-long 0-for-20 skid, and Nolan Arenado and D.J. Seeing his first action in the majors since 2013, Laffey threw 2.1 innings to earn the victory as Colorado captured its second straight 5-3 victory against the Braves before a sellout crowd of 48,254 at Coors Field. He allowed 11 hits and struck out seven. Both of the hits Logan surrendered were to left handed batters, but he struck out Cameron Maybin (a righty) so there isn’t much to say about his outing except that he’s just not now a very good pitcher, even when used properly.

Team trainers and manager Fredi Gonzalez ran on to the field to tend to Grilli, who remained on the ground for several minutes. The Bravos attack produced eight hits and a pair of walks with Kelly Johnson swinging the big bat with a 2-4 night with a homer and three runs driven in with all but one starter reaching base.

“I was frustrated”, Miller said. It’s hard to cover that outfield. We have guys trying to make plays.

Matt Wisler settled down to pitch six solid innings after being jolted in the first by Gonzalez’s two-out, two run homer that soared into the stand of evergreens beyond the center field wall. Braves LHP Josh Outman (thoracic outlet syndrome) began a rehab assignment with the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Braves and pitched one scoreless inning….

Rockies: LHP Jorge De La Rosa (6-3) is 5-1 with a 3.14 ERA over his last seven starts despite dealing with a small cut on the middle finger of his pitching hand for much of that time.
