The fire began shortly after the morning news show began at 6am and the London Fire Brigade confirmed that the situation is “still ongoing”.
Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers tackled the fire, which left part of a post room on the first floor damaged by fire. Around 50 people evacuated the building before the Brigade arrived. “Everyone’s safe and we’re hoping to get back in and on air ASAP”.
The programme due to air after Good Morning Britain, Lorraine, a chat show which is filmed at the same site, proceeded as normal with a recorded appearance from American pop star Selena Gomez.
Ben Shephard posted a video showing the moment with Ranvir Singh explaining: “Apparently we are being told we have to leave the building and it’s not a fire drill it’s real”.
No one was injured in the fire and presenters Kate Garraway and Ranvir Singh even managed to make the most of a bad situation by grabbing a photo opportunity with the firemen of Soho Blue Watch. “The cause of the fire is under investigation”.
Garraway added: “Chances of a bacon sandwich though are quite high so we’re all quite happy”.
A statement from the London Fire Brigade said they were called just before 7am, with the fire under control by around 8.45am.
The team’s playful pictures suggests that any imminent danger is over.
