Google: Android Marshmallow on steady rise, unpatchable phones falling

Google has released the Android platform distribution numbers for the month of May, revealing that the latest iteration of its mobile OS – Marshmallow – is now powering 7.5% of all active Android devices worldwide. A way for developers to figure out which Android versions they want to target with their apps, we basically use them as a progress report of sorts, monitoring the current state of Android as it relates to updating devices to the most current versions.

This, though, is a notable jump from the 4.6 per cent share reported in April, likely boosted by the release of the seemingly popular Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. Google has issued another monthly update that shows yet another strong month for Marshmallow. This annual event will see Marshmallow’s successor, Android N, getting its first big outing after an initial test period. Jelly Bean (Android 4.1, 4.2, and 4.3) dropped from 21.3 percent in April to 20.1 percent in May, and Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) fell from 2.2 percent in April to 2.0 percent in May. Like Lollipop, KitKat is in decline overall and this continues in the latest results, with KitKat dropping down from 33.4-percent to its new total of 32.5-percent. And lastly, Android 2.2 Foryo is still running on 0.1 percent of devices.

Even Gingerbread is still in the game at 2.2%, though Froyo is nearing it’s end by grasping at a low 0.1%.
