Google begins to deploy Android Nougat

VR mode will be introduced in Android with Nougat through Daydream.

Sameer Samat, VP of Product Management, Android & Google Play, said, “Google has taken a different approach to build and launch Nougat which was announced earlier this year”. Nougat was in a beta preview for five months and now you should be seeing the update pop up on your Nexus device.

Among the changes that Nougat promises are the ability to run multiple apps side-by-side in the same screen, battery saving features and support for Daydream, Google’s new VR platform which is set for release later this year. It will be a while before non-Nexus phone buyers will be able to experience the Android 7.0 Nougat.

Another neat thing about Nougat is that it will be receiving quarterly maintenance updates and developer previews will also be released, the next one to come with fall.

The General Mobile 4G, an Android One device which is getting the Nougat update directly from Google but isn’t officially part of the Nexus program, is not listed on that download page. As for flashing a Nougat-based custom ROM on that unbelievable Nexus 5 of yours, well, you’ll have to wait, or figure out a way of doing it yourself.

Now begins the wait for Android 7.0 to first show up on Google’s Android distribution dashboard and then filter through to users, as handset makers gradually update existing devices and release new ones.

The blog post also confirmed that the LG V20 will be the first non-Google phone to ship with Nougat on board, and that any devices enrolled in the Android Beta Program will also receive the final version soon.
