Google bypasses the password with new phone-based authentication program
Google is testing a new authentication feature that could make your smartphone the key to your online accounts when signing in to other devices like a tablet or laptop. After all, many users employ weak passwords or share them between sites, so this method may save a few keystrokes and be more secure. You’re still given the option to log in with your regular password if you so choose.

The trial is now invites-only but one Reddit member who is part of the program has documented the sign up and login process here. It also provides a link to a separate page if the user wants to use their password instead. When an user tries to login to his Google account in the browser it asks the user to check his phone. One mandatory prerequisite is that your phone have a secure lockscreen using either a PIN, password, pattern, or fingerprint, because this lockscreen security essentially replaces your traditional password for login.
The Web giant will then send a message to your phone asking if you’re trying to sign in. The feature only works on phones with a screen lock or Touch ID so that in case the phone is in the hands of an unauthorized user it’s not possible for him to unlock it. Although, it should be noted that you will still be able to use your password to login if you lose your phone or your battery dies.
Google also leans on Bluetooth for similar functionality: Using SmartLock, I can unlock a Chromebook or Android phone simply by having a trusted Bluetooth device, such as an Android Wear watch, nearby.

For now the preview system is only available for signing in to Google accounts but it could become an even more compelling feature if Google enables it for third-party apps.
