Google Confirms Chrome OS Will Support Android Apps, Google Play; Details Rollout

You’ve got a reason to be excited if you are a Chromebook user. Users now have more incentives to use a Chromebook instead of just using it as a netbook. And enterprising Chrome OS users may find some way to enable the feature unofficially. During the Google I/O 2016, the search engine giant announced a series of new products to the world and among them was something interesting for those using the company’s Chromebooks. All you can be sure about is to access all Play Store apps on Chrome OS.

“The same apps that run on phones and tablets can now run on Chromebooks without compromising their speed, simplicity or security”, Google said on its blog. The first devices to receive support, meanwhile, will be the Acer Chromebook R11 and Chromebook Flip, along with the aforementioned 2015 edition of Google’s own Chromebook Pixel. Google says that in IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker, May 2016, Chromebooks overtook Macs as the second most popular computer system in the US.

The company also mentioned that it’s working with the hardware partners to introduce more exciting devices, which are specifically designed for the Play Store. Google also added that “over time”, the Daydream platform will be used for a wide range of devices. You will no longer need Android Auto-compatible hardware, like a head unit or vehicle entertainment system.

Google will be making the developer kit for Chrome OS Android apps available in June.

Chromebooks now do not have any storage options as everything that a user has access to is always stored in the cloud.

Android notifications will be delivered through Chromebooks and you’ll be able to share files between Chrome windows and Android apps.

“Not only are we addressing numerous existing needs and use cases that people have for their Chromebooks, we are also betting on the millions of developers who are innovating every day to build the next great experience that wasn’t even possible on PC platforms before”.
