Google Doodle celebrates BKS Iyengar’s birth anniversary in Yoga style

He was born into a poor family in India in 1918, the 11th of 13 children, and struggled throughout his childhood with illnesses including malaria and typhoid. As the man who took yoga global, Iyengar is remembered around the world as “yoga guru” who founded a particular style of practice and made it famous across the globe.

Iyengar died on 20 August 2014 from kidney failure at 95-years-old, his teachings however, remain an intrinsic part of the backbone that form the fundamentals of yoga.

Iyengar is credited with doing more than anyone else to popularise yoga in the West. He has five daughters namely Geeta, Vinita, Suchita, Sunita and Savitha and one son Prashant.

In 1937, he was 19, he was sent to the city of Pune in the state of Maharashtra to teach yoga but it was not until 1952 that Iyengar became an global guru, after he introduced renowned violinist introduced the violinist Yehudi Menuhin to the art.

One of his most famous work, “Light on Yoga” has been translated into 18 languages.

– Iyengar also supported nature conservation and had donated Rs 2 million to the Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, Mysore.

– Mumbai: The Iyengar Yogashraya was inaugurated in 2001.

Iyengar, also known as the father of modern yoga was awarded all three Padma Awards.
