Google Drive gets more privacy controls

The implementation of Information Rights Management (IRM) in Google Drive means that you’ll be able to specifically disable downloading, printing or copying from documents shared on Google Drive via the advanced sharing menu.

Once you disable those features, documents, spreadsheets and presentations will notify you that export options have been disabled in the File menu. Check the “Disable options to download, print, and copy for commenters and viewers” box and click “Save changes”.

Theoretically, this should make it tough for others to replicate files that may contain sensitive information.

Google Drive has been updated with additional features that give users optional control over how shared content is used by the recipient. Developers can also implement the functionality in their apps with an API.

But at least for now, the feature can be activated via Drive on the web, and only by file owners. If you take the risk of sharing a file with someone, this feature will merely remind them that they are not supposed to share the file with others.
