Google Drives Away With Tesla’s Auto Pilot Engg. Manager Robert Rose

Though only there six months, Rose was hired by Tesla to flawless its recently launched Autopilot software. Rose is clearly not attached to the Boston Dynamics rather autonomous team under the Google mothership. He was the lead software engineer for the space transport startup’s first Falcon 9 and Dragon flight.

Rose’s previous employers include HP as well as SpaceX, another company associated with Tesla via Elon Musk.

In the end, it seems to be another interesting escalation of the ongoing poaching war…

Under Elon Musk’s wing he joined the company’s Autopilot semi-autonomous driving technology. On Tuesday, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted the tech giant a patent for helping the self-driving auto communicate with people walking on the sidewalk too.

As Rose moved to Google from Tesla, Liang Heng moved to Tesla from Google, having worked at the Google Maps Street View program for a year and half. After a brief stint at machine learning firm Vicarious, he joined Tesla last May to lead the Autopilot team into the release of v7.

What exactly Rose will be working on at Google is not very clear for now, but his LinkedIn profile listed the role as that of a software engineer for Google Robotics. With this ambitious project, the company is rapidly becoming the largest pool of top software engineering talents. Tesla has said the technology allows its Model S vehicles to steer, change lanes and manage speeds in mostly autonomous fashion.

Tesla’s Autopilot software already provides vehicles with partial autonomy.

While Tesla is trying to develop its autonomous driving technology by gradually implementing more advanced driver assist features under its “Autopilot” program, Google is strictly developing a fully autonomous technology. On one hand, Tesla poaches employees from Apple, while on the other, Apple hires the employees Tesla fires.
