Google Dumbs Down Safe Browsing Alerts to Help Out Lesser-Skilled Webmasters

Yet, while these warnings are meant to encourage site owners to fix a malware problem, a recent study by Google of almost 800,000 hijacked sites found that a significant share of site owners don’t understand why the site was marked as a malware risk and don’t know how to remedy it. This week, the report has been updated to contain new information.

But there’s another side to Safe Browsing warnings, that most of us don’t know about, and that’s the alerts the owners of these sites receive when their website is marked as malicious. Now, the initiative will also help webmasters fight security issues.

Google says that with Search Console, it aims to assist webmasters to provide a secure and safe browsing experience to the website’s visitors.

Besides the detailed reports, the Safe Browsing console now also recommends different courses of action website owners can take, along with sample URLs they can use to unearth the source of the problem.

The types of security issues that can show include malware, deceptive pages, harmful downloads, and uncommon downloads.

Google is encouraging site owners to register their site in Search Console, which the company uses to send notifications about security issues it detects.

Google is now providing more information to website owners whose online properties are temporarily blocked as unsafe by its Safe Browsing technology as a way to help them fix the identified problems faster.

Google announced new changes to its search engine for safe browsing alerts which inform about the security related problems to users.

While crooks hosting malicious websites don’t care about these warnings, there are many hacked websites belonging to legitimate businesses that want their website removed from the Safe Browsing blacklist and returned to regular Google search results.

However, the study also found 12 percent of sites were hijacked against within 30 days, suggesting some site owners weren’t addressing the root cause of the hijacking.
