Google Fiber just announced a home phone service inspired by Google Voice

Google has said the service is coming to seven more cities, but for now, we’ll have to assume Fiber Phone will launch in one of the current Fiber markets.

In a blog post announcing the service, Google said, “Landlines can be familiar, reliable and provide high-quality service, but the technology hasn’t always kept up”.

Google’s landline service will roll out to residential customers in “a few areas” before rolling out to all locations with Fiber. The service will offer unlimited local and national calls as well as worldwide rates at par with Google Voice, which works out to Rs 0.6 per minute to India for example. Its rates for worldwide calls, in the meantime, will be aligned to the same cheap rates as Google Voice. For familiarity sake, says Google Fiber product manager John Shriver-Blake.

“Fiber Phone can help you make the most of your home phone-even when you’re not at home”. Still, the service could be a welcome for families that still have to pay for landline and are already using Google Fiber broadband and TV services. As of 2013, about 40 percent of adults in the United States said they used a cell phone exclusively for voice communications, according to survey data from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention.

Fiber Phone is basically landline service for Google Fiber customers.

It may seem like nearly no one uses a landline these days – but Google wants to change that. The device has phone and Ethernet jacks, which means compatibility shouldn’t be a problem for many handsets. That’s why Google revealed Google Fiber Phone. You can also enjoy call screen, spam filtering, and do-not-disturb features.

In a number of ways, Fiber Phone adds mobile phone functionality to users’ landline.

You will also receive a “Fiber Phone box” when you sign up for the service, and it’s compatible with the phones you now own.
