Google Fiber’s heading to some San Francisco homes

This is obviously going to limit the areas in San Francisco where Google will be able to provide the service. “Now, as Google Fiber grows, we’re looking for more ways to serve cities of different shapes and sizes”, Michael Slinger, director of business operations, Google Fiber, said in this blog post.

Taking a similar path it first paved in Atlanta, Google Fiber said it is accelerating its move into San Francisco by using existing fiber there to deliver services to certain apartments, condos and housing properties in the market.

In thinking about how best to bring Google Fiber to some residents in this unique city, we considered a number of factors, including the City’s rolling hills, miles of coastline, and historic neighborhoods.

Google Fiber is finally headed to the company’s hometown.

Now, in its latest fiber city, San Francisco, Google’s laser is homing in on multiple dwelling units using existing fiber.

San Francisco, a city of more than 800,000 and a hub of tech companies and activity, has the same Web access as most of the country. At this time, Google has not revealed with apartments and condos are in the pipeline to get service; it does say, though, that some affordable housing properties can look forward to it, as well.

Comcast and AT&T, two of the major cable, Internet and telephone companies serving Huntsville now, aren’t ceding anything to Google Fiber. Google may need to do some work outside and inside buildings to connect properties to the existing fiber, but otherwise not much construction will be required.
