Google has stopped selling its Nexus streaming player

Probably Nexus and Motorola Moto G4 users might be the first to receive Android O, that is when Google plans to roll it out. The Android TV device was launched in October 2014.

Low-priced to buy and easy to set-up, the Nexus Player wasn’t the most powerful set-top option but it was popular enough to overcome the fact that its 1.8 GHz quad core Intel Atom processor wasn’t quite up to running more than a handful of games. Other hardware like the Mi Box from Xiaomi is on the horizon, and manufacturers are building Android TV into more and more TVs themselves, but the retirement of the Nexus Player removes an important affordable option from the current Android TV lineup.

Manufactured by ASUS, and priced at $99, the Nexus Player was an Android TV box created to show off the capabilities of Google’s entertainment-focused platform.

A spokesperson has revealed to The Verge that the Nexus Player will continue to sell on some retail sites.

The Nexus Player came with a voice search remote and an optional gaming remote.

Last month the Nexus 9 tablet went out of stock on the Google Store.

It features an internal storage of 8 GB.

The reason for the Nexus Player being discontinued is unknown.

Even though Google has stopped selling Nexus Player, it is one of the few Nexus branded devices that can be upgraded to developer preview version of Android N. At present, the Nvidia Shield box remains the only Android TV product that can be purchased from Google.
