It’s not necessarily how a lot of us would spend an otherwise handsome Northern California afternoon, but Wednesday was the first day of Google I/O, the internet giant’s annual conference for its developer community.
Right now, Google is working with third party devs to take port Google Home to other devices like phones and cars and basically make it available outside of the house.
The company has also announced a new virtual reality platform named Daydream. To me, the only big shortfall of Amazon Echo is that it’s not connected to Google and it can’t just give me information from the World Wide Web, so I would take the Google Home product if it’s even remotely comparable in price.
So, what’s the lesson here? Sounds familiar? Home echoes Amazon’s Echo, a voice-controlled smart speaker.
Google’s other big announcement at the May 18 event, held at an outdoor amphitheatre near Google’s headquarters, was a virtual reality platform called Daydream created to work with the Android mobile operating system.
“The Assistant is conversational – an ongoing two-way dialogue between you and Google that understands your world and helps you get things done”, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said.
Google Assistant lacks a charming female moniker like the ones competitors have. “Google’s work in contextual awareness – the logical interpretation of text and voice queries – will be a significant differentiation”. On Google Home, the assistant will help you find the music you want to listen to or the temperature you want your home to be.
In an attempt to outshine Apple, Google is also adding features to its Android operating system, including the ability to run apps without actually installing them on a device.
There is also Apple’s Siri which, like the “Okay Google” on Android phones, is built in to all Apple iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch devices built within the last few years. Here’s everything you need to know about the Amazon Echo rival. It is going to be tethered to the “N” version of Android that Google plans to release later this year and requires more processing power and sensors unavailable in any phone already out. Artificial intelligence, a term used to describe efforts to develop software that acts and behaves more like humans, has been a focal point of Google’s for years.

“As long as your watch has a WiFi, Bluetooth or cellular connection, you’ll be able to make calls, send messages or launch Spotify”, said David Singleton, Google’s vice president of engineering. Google introduced its own messaging app-Allo.
