Google I/O: Tech giant unveils Siri competitor at annual conference

Is Home smarter than Echo? Google actually has a huge head start in terms of voice recognition technology, but also contextual technology.

The company launched Google Home, a competitor to Amazon Alexa, due later this year.

With almost half the amphitheater exposed to sunlight, the tech giant handed out free sunglasses and sunscreen to attendees, who supplemented with their own caps and parasols.

And Google expanded its Firebase mobile developer tools for iOS, Android, and the mobile web.

“We’ve been thinking hard about how to bring this vision of Google Assistant into your home”, said Pichai. This device will deliver Google Assistant technology right into the living room. The internet company will now be putting its constantly collected information to good use with Google Home, a voice-activated home automation system that utilizes information about customers.

The built-in virtual assistant will be a plus for Google, but it also raises privacy concerns, as the virtual assistant listens to conversations unless the user explicitly goes into privacy mode, and also because Allo lacks end-to-end encryption.

Google home is basically Google’s answer to the Amazon Echo.

Eventually the hope is that you’ll be able to control things in your house with nothing but your voice.

“Further in the future, we’ll work with developers to make it possible to control things beyond the home”, said Queiroz, “Like booking a vehicle, ordering dinner, or sending flowers to mom and much, much more, all with just your voice”. The company also introduced Allo, a messaging app, and a rebranding of its virtual assistant.

Among the apps that will be available on Daydream are Google maps and Streetview, YouTube and Play Movies. What sets it apart from other messaging apps is the inclusion of Google assistant, which you can either interact with one on one, or call upon for assistance during your chats with friends.

“Duo” is a companion app for one-to-one video calling.

UBS analyst Eric Sheridan said one of the most important announcements was Google Assistant, which is a new digital personal assistant that appears to be much more advanced than Google Now.

As part of its investment in virtual reality, Google is launching Daydream, a virtual reality platform for Android. This will allow developers and hardware manufacturers to get in on the VR game with all the benefits Android has to offer.

The device is shaped nicely and is one of the most goodlooking devices the company has ever produced.

Apart from the encryption policy, Allo is also able to generate automated replies and find additional information via Assistant.

Created to fix the pain from downloading an app you will use only once, Instant Apps run on Google’s servers instead of your phone. “It’s a Google for you, by you“, Pichai wrote in an official blog post.
