Google is making Android, Chrome more accessible for people with disabilities

As part of Google’s updates Monday, it has launched VIsion Settings, which will allow users to control specifications such as magnification, font size, display size and TalkBack on their Welcome screen, which appears when people activate and turn on their new Android devices. So if you want to open the “Chrome” web browser, you can just say open Chrome or if you want to go back to the home screen, you just say “go home”. Simply click the “become a tester” button to join and give it a shot right now. You’ll need to enroll in the testing program for the unreleased version of the app, after which you’ll be able to download it from the Play Store here for free. “That’s why it’s so important to build tools to make technology accessible to everyone – from people with visual impairments who need screen readers or larger text, to people with motor restrictions that prevent them from interacting with a touch screen, to people with hearing impairments who can not hear their device’s sounds”. Now, nearly a year later, the company has launched Voice Access beta for users. There are accessibility apps that overlay on top of other apps with a set of generic commands, but they don’t quite integrate the way Voice Access does.

In a blog post, they also announced that Chromebooks will have a better screen reader called ChromeVox from now on. “You can install it and try it out for yourself here”, it said.

“Google Docs now allows typing, editing and formatting using voice commands-for example, “copy” or “insert table”-making it easier for people who can’t use a touchscreen to edit documents”. The app allows you to navigate between your home screen and other screens as well and interact with the content you’re seeing by using voice commands.
