Google marks 17th birthday, Doodle goes retro!

Google keeps moving their birthday around, so what is the actual day that the internet search giant should be celebrating?

The doodle features a retro, plastic PC, lava lamp and even 1998’s “Google!”

Here is a pictorial list of Google’s achievements in its 17 year journey. If one were to by domain name registration, then Google is really 18 years old, because Larry Page and Sergey Brin registered Google.com on September 15, 1997.

In its blogpost explaining the Doodle, Google wrote that “in the world of computer programming, 17 is widely considered the least random number”.

Since 2004, on the occasion of sixth birthday, Google is celebrating online and on that year September 7 was marked as the birthday. A year before that, in 2006 the search engine giant celebrated on 26 September.

However, some reports point out that Google is itself not sure of its birthday. Far from the high concepts of today, there’s a lava lamp (they had a big resurgence in the 90s, honest) a Linux penguin mascot and servers held together with lego. The pictures are an homage to how Google started in its early days.

The company filed incorporation papers on 4 September 1998. However, the first Doodle, for the Burning Man festival in 1998, actually occurred before the company was technically founded.

When is Google's birthday?
