Google Now adds extra customization with new “Explore Interests” feature

Google Assistant is coming later this year to beef up Android’s digital assistant experience. But one area where Google Now falls a little short is in customizing the assistant more precisely to your needs. For example, you could tell Google that you’re interested in Game of Thrones in TV or LeBron James in People.

Unfortunately for those interested in the feature, a Google representative told TechCrunch that Explore Interests is now an experiment the company is testing, so rollout may not take place for a while, if ever – though today’s internet buzz will likely confirm to the company just how much interest there is in such an option. However, a Google spokesperson confirmed “Interests” is an experiment that the company is testing with the look-and-feel of the product, adding that Google has nothing to announce at this time.

Different from just toggling buttons for topics in the app’s settings, users may be able to customize their interests across various categories and let Google take care of the rest. Meanwhile, the “People” section may show you cards for politicians like Clinton and Trump, as well as athletes, actors and other figures.

Google Now is already pretty good at keeping you updated on topics that you’ve shown interest in, like a favorite team or mobile operating system. That may be rectified in the near future, according to leaked screenshots that show a feature that does just that called ‘Explore Interests’. The user is given a choice of topics or people that are now popular in their area or trending worldwide, but we don’t see a custom way to add one.
